SERP

Search Engine Results Page

The SERP is the page you see after typing a search: the ads, the AI overview, the map pack, the organic links, the FAQs. Every element on it is a placement someone is competing for.

Why it matters

The SERP decides how much attention "ranking well" is worth. A #1 organic spot below an ad, a map pack and an AI overview is a very different asset than a #1 with clean air above it, and strategies that ignore the page's furniture routinely overvalue the wrong wins.

How it works

Google assembles each SERP per query from competing modules. Which modules appear tells you the query's intent: shopping modules mean buying intent, map packs mean local intent, overviews mean informational intent. Your content has to win the module that matches the intent, not just "rank".

What to do about it

Before chasing any keyword, look at its SERP. What modules show, who owns them, and where the first real click goes tells you what winning would deliver, sometimes it's a lot, sometimes it's not worth the fight.
