Why it matters
If your search traffic is load-bearing revenue, updates are weather you have to plan around. The pattern across recent years is consistent, though: updates keep rewarding genuinely helpful content from credible sources and keep punishing content manufactured for the algorithm.
How it works
Google announces major "core updates" and spam updates, rolls them out over weeks, and rarely explains specifics. Recovery from a hit is possible but slow, usually by fixing content quality and trust signals, then waiting for a future update to re-evaluate.
What to do about it
Diversify (email, referrals, brand search), and make the strategic bet that survives every update: be the source a careful human would choose. When a drop happens, diagnose against the update's known focus before changing anything drastic.
