AI Mode
AI Mode is Google's conversational search tab: ask a question and a Gemini-powered assistant answers it outright, citing a handful of sources instead of listing ten blue links. It's Google's fullest answer to ChatGPT, one click from the default results.
Why it matters
AI Overviews sit on top of the results page. AI Mode replaces it. When a buyer uses it there's no list to scroll and no page two: there's an answer, a few citations, and everyone else. For a business, the question shifts from where you rank to whether you're named at all.
How it works
AI Mode takes a query and fans it out into multiple sub-searches behind the scenes, runs them in parallel, then synthesises what it finds into a single answer with linked sources. Because it searches more broadly than the query as typed, pages that answer adjacent and follow-up questions get pulled in alongside the obvious matches.
What to do about it
The same work that earns AI Overviews citations earns AI Mode citations: answer-first pages that lift cleanly, consistent entity signals so the machine knows who you are, and third-party corroboration. Then measure it. Ask the buying questions in your category and record whether it names you.
