Why it matters
Recognition is compound interest: every consistent appearance makes the next one work harder. A distinctive visual system also signals competence before a word is read: buyers judge whether you look like the calibre of firm they want, in about a second.
How it works
A visual identity defines core elements (mark, palette, type, imagery style) and, critically, the rules of combination: spacing, hierarchy, what goes where. Distinctiveness comes from owning a few assets hard (a colour, a shape, a typographic move) rather than from decorating everything.
What to do about it
Line up your last ten public artefacts: site, decks, socials, proposals. If a stranger wouldn't confidently say they're one company, the system (or the discipline applying it) needs work.
