Why it matters
Content quality gets you into the game; links from respected sites decide the tiebreaks. They're also the signal competitors can't fake cheaply: which is exactly why engines keep trusting them, and why bought-in-bulk links are a penalty waiting to happen.
How it works
Engines weigh who links to you, from what context, with what wording. One relevant link from an industry publication outweighs hundreds from junk directories. Earned mentions (press, partnerships, genuinely citable content) are the sustainable supply; schemes are the unsustainable one.
What to do about it
Make link-worthy assets part of the content plan: original viewpoints, useful tools, definitive explainers. Then do the unglamorous outreach: the places that already mention your category are the warmest list.
