Share of voice

Share of voice is how much of your market's attention you own versus competitors: across search results, media mentions, social conversation, and now AI answers. It's a leading indicator: share of voice today tends to become share of market later.

Why it matters

Revenue metrics tell you about decisions buyers made months ago; share of voice tells you about the ones forming now. It's also the clearest way to see a competitor's push early: their voice grows before their sales do, and yours shrinks the same way.

How it works

Pick the surfaces that matter in your category (priority search terms, industry media, the questions people ask assistants) and measure what fraction of the visible answers, results and mentions are yours. Tracked monthly against the same competitor set, the trend is the signal.

What to do about it

Start narrow: your twenty most valuable search queries plus the same questions asked to AI assistants. One spreadsheet, once a month: who appears, who's cited, who's absent.
