Why it matters
DNS is a single point of failure businesses forget they own: records misconfigured during a migration take down the site and email together, and access left with a departed contractor is a real operational risk. Five minutes of hygiene prevents very bad days.
How it works
Records map names to destinations: the website's address, the mail servers, verification entries for services. Changes propagate globally within minutes to hours. The registrar (where the domain is rented) and the DNS host (where records live) may be different companies.
What to do about it
Confirm today that your business owns its registrar and DNS logins, not an ex-agency, not a former employee's personal account. Document what each record does before anyone touches them.
